In the first quarter of the 19th century, Alpennia, like the rest of Europe, has seen the rise and fall of the French Empire under Napoleon and is struggling to find their place in the aftermath. The greatest Alpennian asset in that struggle is their strong tradition of thaumaturgy, calling on the Mysteries of the Saints to answer the challenge of more powerful neighbors. At first, Margerit Sovitre has little thought for nations and politics. Her interest in mystical studies is entirely personal. But as the Alpennian stories progress, Margerit and her circle of friends will be drawn ever deeper into intrigues at the highest levels, and they will learn that the ancient rituals that protect Alpennia are only one face of the magical forces at work.

Reading Order

This page will always list the stories in in-story chronological order, although that may become tricky with some of the planned short fiction that may be set in the same time-scope as other works, or that have a framing story different from the main story. Some people prefer to read a series in the publication order, because it follows the author's development of the setting and characters. If that's your preference, you can follow this relaease order. I've included planned future novels by their working titles, but have only listed planned short fiction by a general description. The not-yet-published short fiction is also quite uncertain as to relative publication date, but this is the planned order. Works that are not yet available (in many cases, not yet written) are marked with an asterisk. And there will undoubtedly be other short works that I don't have pinned down yet.

  • Daughter of Mystery
  • "Three Nights at the Opera"
  • The Mystic Marriage
  • Mother of Souls
  • "Gifts Tell Truth"
  • Floodtide
  • *[short piece of uncertain length about Jeanne de Cherdillac's first love]
  • *[short piece, more of a character sketch, about Antuniet and Jeanne's trip to Prague, via Heidelberg and What Happened There]
  • *[short story about a girl who "sees ghosts" who will be a viewpoint character in Sisters in Spirit]
  • *Mistress of Shadows
  • *[novelette or novella about what Margerit is doing during Mistress of Shadows, will possibly be incorporated in Mistress of Shadows depending on complexity]
  • *[short story or novelette about what Anna Monterrez is doing during Mistress of Shadows, this is now going to be incorporated into Mistress of Shadows because otherwise it's hard to make certain elements of the ending make sense]
  • *Sisters in Spirit
  • *Heirs of the Deluge [This is the final novel of the main series as planned.]
  • *Tapestry [This is a planned "real story" of the philosopher Tanfrit that is not part of the main series. I'm putting it last only because I have no idea if I'll ever get to it.]

Chronological Order

Book #0.2
February, 2018

In The Mystic Marriage, Vicomtesse Jeanne de Cherdillac tells another character, ‘I have loved—truly loved—only four women. One of them is dead. One never found the courage to say either yes or no. You were the third.’ When I wrote those words, I knew relatively little about those first two women, but I had the first inkling that Jeanne might have some interesting stories to tell. This is not the story of either that first or second love, but of the time between them when grief and regret had not yet been replaced by archness and a cultivated sophistication.
